The direct answer
A 250-pound Type I ladder is enough when your complete working load is clearly under 250 pounds and the exact ladder fits the task. That can be a sensible, lighter choice for one known homeowner doing ordinary projects with a small tool load. The rating is a maximum, not a target, so use the heaviest realistic trip rather than today's body weight and an empty hand.
A 300-pound Type IA ladder is the better default when the calculated load approaches 250 pounds, the ladder serves multiple people, or tools and materials vary. The extra 50 pounds can absorb real differences between trips—a winter coat, a fuller tool belt, a paint container, or a different user—without pretending those items weigh nothing.
If any realistic trip totals 250 pounds or more, reject the 250-pound ladder. If the total is below 250 but close enough that normal changes could erase the gap, the 300-pound rating is the more practical choice. A higher rating never excuses a wrong ladder type, unsafe setup, electrical exposure, damage, or overreaching.
ANSI/ALI names the 250-pound category Type I, Heavy Duty and the 300-pound category Type IA, Extra Heavy Duty. Retailers and manufacturers may also use their own performance labels. Match the Type and working-load number on the exact ladder's safety label rather than relying on words such as “professional,” “heavy,” or “industrial.”
What actually counts toward the rating
The American Ladder Institute's selection guidance says to add the user, clothing and personal protective equipment, tools and supplies being carried, and tools and supplies stored on the ladder. The paint can hanging from the top, the drill in a holster, and the parts in a tray count even though they are not in your hands.

Do one calculation for the heaviest likely trip. A bathroom lightbulb and a roofing repair are not the same load case. If the ladder is shared, calculate for the heaviest user and the heaviest task combination that the ladder is actually expected to support.
Do not subtract a handrail, wall contact, helper, stabilizer, or accessory from the load. The labeled capacity belongs to the complete approved ladder setup, while each accessory may also have its own instructions and limits. Stay within every applicable limit.
Three calculations that make the choice clear
Example 1: clearly within 250 pounds
A 165-pound user plus 8 pounds of boots and clothing, 12 pounds of tools, and 10 pounds of material totals 195 pounds. A correctly sized Type I 250-pound ladder passes this stated load with 55 pounds between the calculation and the limit. There is no capacity reason to buy Type IA, though features, durability, availability, and other users may still favor it.
Example 2: technically below, practically close
A 205-pound user plus 10 pounds of clothing, 15 pounds of tools, and 15 pounds of supplies totals 245 pounds. That is below 250 on paper, but only five pounds remain. A slightly heavier tool, a filled paint container, or an estimation error can cross the label. The 300-pound ladder is the sensible choice for this use.
Example 3: the lower rating is disqualified
A 225-pound user plus 10 pounds of clothing, 15 pounds of tools, and 10 pounds of material totals 260 pounds. A Type I ladder is not an option. A Type IA ladder leaves 40 pounds between that stated load and its 300-pound maximum, provided the exact model's size, material, condition, and setup also fit.
There is no universal extra-buffer percentage in this guide. The label remains the maximum. Choosing space above a careful calculation is practical planning for normal variation—not permission to estimate loosely, exceed the rating, or add uncounted load later.

Do not assume a longer ladder carries more. ALI explicitly separates ladder length from weight capacity. A 12-foot Type I ladder still has a 250-pound rating; a 4-foot Type IA model can carry 300 pounds. Length answers where you may work. Duty rating answers how much the labeled ladder may support.

A higher rating is not a blanket quality score
A Type IA ladder is designed and labeled for a higher working load than a Type I ladder of the same basic category. That does not prove it is longer, more comfortable, more electrically appropriate, easier to carry, or better for your job. Compare the whole product after the capacity gate passes.
Keep size and standing height separate

Choose material around the hazard
OSHA requires nonconductive side rails in covered construction work where the employee or ladder could contact exposed energized electrical equipment. Inspect and set up the exact ladder
OSHA's covered-workplace rule says ladders must not be loaded beyond the manufacturer's rated capacity, must be used only for their designed purpose, and must be inspected for visible defects. A higher rating does not rescue a bent rail, loose step, damaged foot, unreliable spreader, unreadable label, unstable surface, or user leaning outside the rails.

Werner's current cross-reference catalog lists the 6006 at an 18-pound approximate shipping weight with a 41⅛-inch base spread and 22-inch bottom width. It lists the 6206 at 22 pounds, a 41¼-inch base spread, and 23⅜-inch bottom width. That four-pound catalog difference accompanies changes in construction and features as well as rating, so it is not the “weight cost” of 50 pounds of capacity by itself.
The 6000 and 6200 series also use different tops, bracing, spreader arrangements, and feet. Compare those current model details independently. The clean lesson is narrower: when both exact 6-foot fiberglass ladders fit the job, the 6006 is the lower-weight 250-pound path and the 6206 is the higher-capacity 300-pound path.
The before-you-buy checklist
- Identify every person realistically expected to use the ladder.
- Use the heaviest expected user's current weight.
- Add boots, clothing, PPE, tool belt, tools, supplies, and materials.
