The direct answer
Choose an 8-foot fiberglass stepladder as the practical default for painting, changing fixtures, servicing vents, or doing other two-handed work at a 10-foot ceiling. A current Werner height chart gives an 8-foot stepladder a 12-foot average reach and a 6-foot stepladder a 10-foot average reach. That makes the six-footer a borderline size at this ceiling, while the eight-footer gives more room to choose a permitted step that keeps the work around shoulder-to-head height instead of at the end of a stretch.
A six-footer is not automatically wrong. Louisville currently lists its FS1506-S51 with a 10-foot-4-inch maximum reach. For a taller user replacing a detector or touching up one small spot, that exact model may fit. But “maximum reach” is an estimate, not a promise that every user can work comfortably or safely at that elevation. Arm length, body height, tool size, task duration, and the location of the work all matter.
If a 6-foot ladder only works when you stretch, stand above the labeled limit, or hold a two-handed tool overhead at full reach, it does not fit; move to the correctly rated 8-foot stepladder and confirm its footprint fits the room.
This guide is for a level, open floor under a flat 10-foot ceiling. Stairs, landings, tubs, counters, furniture, vaulted ceilings, and narrow halls change the support and access problem. For walls above stair treads, use the separate painting-stairs ladder guide. Do not place a stepladder on a table, box, platform, or other object to manufacture extra height.
If the ceiling opening is a route into storage rather than merely an overhead work point, use the separate attic-access ladder guide. Entering a hatch adds opening fit, landing space, installation, and recall questions that a normal ceiling-height calculation does not answer.
Maximum reach is not where your feet go
Three measurements get confused in product listings. Nominal ladder size is the length category printed on the ladder. Maximum standing height is the highest permitted foot position published for that model. Maximum reach adds an assumed person's body and upward reach to that standing height.
Louisville's current specifications make the difference concrete. The 8-foot FS1508 lists a maximum standing height of 68 inches—5 feet 8 inches—while its maximum reach is 147 inches, or 12 feet 3 inches. The 6-foot FS1506-S51 lists a 45-inch maximum standing height—3 feet 9 inches—and a 124-inch maximum reach, or 10 feet 4 inches. The ladder's nominal size is not the foot height, and the reach figure is not a platform on which everyone works equally well.
The American Ladder Institute says the highest standing level on a stepladder is a little more than two feet below the top and must be marked on the side-rail label. OSHA's construction rule separately says the top or top step of a stepladder is not to be used as a step. Follow the exact product label even when a generic chart or your fingertips suggest that one more step would solve the job.

The 8-foot model buys almost two feet of published reach, but it also adds about 7.3 pounds, nearly a foot of open floor depth, and roughly two feet of closed storage height. That is why “always buy the taller ladder” is not a useful rule. Buy the shortest ladder that lets the specific user perform the specific job from an allowed step without leaning or full-extension strain.
Also compare the room, not just the numbers. An open living room may easily hold an eight-footer. A powder room may not. If the larger ladder cannot open fully on a level floor with all four feet supported and the spreaders locked, it is the wrong access method for that location.
Match the ladder to the work at the ceiling
Changing a bulb, battery, or detector
A short, light task can fit a six-footer when the item is directly overhead, the user's reach is comfortably within the model's limit, and both hands can be managed without losing a firm hold while climbing. Bring small parts up in a belt or manufacturer-approved tool area rather than climbing with objects that interfere with a handhold.
Painting a ceiling or cutting in
Painting expands the work zone across the room and keeps an arm elevated for longer. An eight-footer usually offers the better working range because the user can select a lower permitted step, descend, and reposition frequently. A longer roller extension may reduce climbs, but it does not make an undersized ladder safe or remove the need to keep the body between the rails.
Ceiling fans and light fixtures
These jobs can involve awkward components, two-handed fastening, and electrical hazards. Choose fiberglass when electrical exposure is part of the environment, but do not treat fiberglass as insulation you can rely on. De-energizing, confirming the condition, handling heavy fixtures, and following applicable electrical instructions are separate parts of the job. If the work cannot be controlled from a stable position, use qualified help.
Registers, speakers, and repeated maintenance
For a route of vents, speakers, or other repeated ceiling points, the extra usable height of an eight-footer often matters more than its additional carry weight. Efficiency comes from a stable working position and deliberate repositioning—not from reaching one more ceiling bay from the same setup.
The room has to fit the ladder too
A stepladder needs firm, level support under all four feet. Open it completely and lock the spreaders. Keep the top and bottom areas clear, and do not set it where a door, person, pet, rolling chair, or moving equipment can displace it. OSHA requires covered workplace ladders to be used only on stable, level surfaces unless secured against displacement and to be kept clear of traffic or protected from it; those are sensible planning checks at home too.
Face the ladder while climbing. Keep a firm handhold and your body near the middle of the steps. Climb down before moving it. Do not climb the rear braces unless the exact ladder is designed and labeled for two-sided climbing, and never use a folded stepladder as a leaning ladder unless the product is specifically designed for that configuration.
Check the complete load
Both examples below carry a published Type IA 300-pound duty rating. That number includes the user, clothing, protective equipment, tools, supplies, and anything stored on the ladder. It is not a quality score, and buying an eight-foot ladder does not automatically increase capacity. Use the duty-rating guide to total the load before choosing a model.
Measure storage before delivery
The FS1508 is listed at 97.7 inches closed—just over 8 feet—while the FS1506-S51 is listed at 73.8 inches. Measure the closet, garage wall, doorway turns, and carrying path. A ladder that technically fits the ceiling but cannot be stored, carried, or opened without losing control is not the best ladder for the home.

Who it fits: Louisville publishes a 12-foot-3-inch maximum reach and a 5-foot-8-inch maximum standing height. That gives most users more usable positioning room than a six-footer for painting, fixtures, vents, detectors, and other work at a 10-foot ceiling.
Who should skip it: Homes without room for its roughly 52-inch open depth, buyers who cannot safely move or store an eight-foot ladder, or any task where the user would still need to exceed the labeled standing limit.

Louisville FS1506-S51
Who it fits: Louisville publishes a 10-foot-4-inch maximum reach, a 3-foot-9-inch maximum standing height, and a 20.7-pound weight. It is the storage- and carry-friendly option for a user whose measured reach and brief task fit those limits without stretching.
Who should skip it: Users who cannot reach the work from a permitted step, longer two-handed ceiling jobs, or anyone tempted to stand on the top cap or top step to make up the missing height.

These two models share a fiberglass construction and Type IA rating so the decision stays focused on usable height, handling, footprint, and storage. A different brand can fit just as well when its current label and specifications answer those same questions. Do not substitute a marketing reach number for the exact model's standing limit.
The before-you-buy checklist
- Confirm the ceiling and work-point height; do not rely on the room's listing.
- Measure your comfortable overhead work reach, not just a fingertip stretch.
- Check the exact ladder's maximum standing height and reach on its current label.
- Choose the shortest size that lets you work from a permitted step without leaning.
- Confirm all four feet fit on firm, level, clear floor with the ladder fully open.
- Add user, clothing, tools, and supplies before selecting the duty rating.
- Account for electrical exposure; never treat fiberglass as permission to contact energized equipment.
- Measure open footprint, closed storage height, door turns, and carrying path.
- Inspect the rails, steps, feet, spreaders, hardware, and labels before use.
Bottom line: an 8-foot fiberglass stepladder is the better default for most real work at a 10-foot ceiling because it provides useful positioning margin. Choose a 6-foot model only when the exact ladder's published standing level, your measured reach, and the task all fit without stretching or climbing above the label. If neither ladder can open fully on level floor under the work, change the access plan.
